A major medical achievement was recorded in Riyadh as the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program (SCTP) successfully separated Tanzanian twins Nancy and Nice following a complex 16.5-hour procedure at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital, Qazinform News Agency cites SPA.
The surgery was carried out in 10 stages by a multidisciplinary team of 35 specialists, including experts in pediatric surgery, anesthesia, plastic surgery, urology, and orthopedics.
The twins were conjoined at the lower chest, abdomen, and pelvis, sharing vital organs such as the liver, large intestine, urinary and reproductive systems, and a malformed third limb.
This marks the third successful separation of Tanzanian twins and the 71st overall operation performed by the SCTP in its 35-year history.
The program has studied 157 cases from 28 countries, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s global leadership in humanitarian and medical work.
Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, head of the surgical team, expressed gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their support, while the twins’ family conveyed heartfelt thanks for the care and dedication that ensured the success of the operation.
This milestone reinforces Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a world center for complex pediatric surgery and humanitarian medical initiatives.
