Taiwan hit by moderate quake

MOSCOW. February 26. KAZINFORM A 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled southern Taiwan early on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website.

The epicenter of the quake was registered at 10.34 a.m. local time (02:34 GMT) only 54 kilometers from Kaohsiung, the second-largest city in the country, RIA Novosti reports.

No reports of damage or loss of life have been received so far.

Taiwan is regularly hit by the quakes as it lies in a seismically dangerous area, near the junction of the Eurasian tectonic plate and the Philippine Sea plate.

The most recent major earthquake was of 7.6-magnitude, which struck on September 21, 1999, and claimed 2,415 lives.
