The suspect was a male student at Arapahoe High School in a Denver suburb and died apparently from an self-inflicted gunshot wound, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told reporters. The shooting began after the shooter entered the school to target a specific teacher, he said, adding that the teacher was informed of the situation and exited the school, which has 70 classrooms and more than 2,200 students, Xinhua informs.

Police has confirmed the identity of the shooter and contacted with his family, but the reason is still under investigation. One student was taken to a hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound, Robinson said, adding that another student had a minor injury, but it wasn't clear whether that student was shot.

"We are slowly and methodically clearing the school and ensuring that all of our students are safe," Robinson said. "They were safer inside their locked schoolroom classes than they would have been had we allowed them to exit, and that was part of our strategy and part of our protocol."

With the help of the police, students left school in groups methodically to a location nearby and were boarded in school buses and transported to a church called Shepherd of the Hills where they will reunited with families and teachers, he added.
