Sudanese man dies of Ebola in Germany
NEW YORK. KAZINFORM A United Nations worker who was being treated for Ebola at a hospital in Germany has died."We can confirm that the U.N. worker being treated here died last night from the Ebola virus. He was of Sudanese nationality," a spokesman for the St. Georg clinic in Leipzig said Tuesday.
The man had contracted Ebola while working in Liberia, spokesman Constantin Sauff said. Liberia is one of the countries worst affected by the deadly virus, along with Sierra Leone and Guinea. The hospital said in a statement last Thursday that he was being treated in a secure isolation ward and that its doctors and medical staff were "perfectly prepared" for the task. "They practice working inside the airlock system of the secure isolation ward on a regular basis and continuously undergo hygienic trainings to ensure best possible treatment of patients with highly contagious diseases," said Dr. Thomas Grünewald, senior physician at the hospital's Clinic for Infectious Diseases, Tropical Diseases and Nephrology. A Spanish nurse's assistant last week became the first person to contract the virus in Europe in the current outbreak. And a nurse in Dallas, Texas, was this week confirmed as the first to have contracted the virus in the United States. The nurse, Nina Pham, had cared for Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan, who contracted Ebola in Liberia and died of the illness at the hospital. The cases have raised over questions over whether health care workers around the world are equipped to deal with an Ebola case in their community, CNN reports. The nurse's assistant in Spain remains in critical condition and is having trouble breathing, authorities said. The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said the Madrid hospital where Teresa Romero Ramos is being treated doesn't meet all the standards set for centers capable of Ebola care. In a scathing letter distributed Monday, Javier Limon, her husband, said she received only 30 minutes of training in putting on protective gear and called for the resignation of Madrid's regional health minister over how the case has been handled.
