The landslides have blocked highways and stranded 35 towns, though the citizens were starting to tackle the problem along the Comalpa-Temaxcalpa road by shifting tons of stones and earth by hand.

Victor Hiploto Cana, who led the regional branch of the National Peasants Federation (CNC), said that the work really relied on earth moving equipment and that peasants in these towns had also suffered the loss of crops due to flooding.

The areas affected are Huatusco, Cordoba, Orizaba, Coatepec, Xico, Teocelo and Perote; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
