Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev conferred the Order of Dostik on the IDB chief during a meeting on the sidelines of the World Islamic Economic Forum in Astana. Dostik is usually given to heads of state and outstanding international figures.

Ali, who has been IDB president since 1975, holds a B.A. in commerce and a degree in law from Cairo University. He earned his M.A. and Ph. D., both in Public Administration, from the University of Michigan and State University of New York.

Under his leadership, the IDB became one of the most successful institutions under the Organization of the Islamic Conference. He also worked as the secretary-general of Muslim World League (MWL) during 1993-95 when he was given the task of restructuring the MWL.

Ali has been keen on taking the IDB to a world of excellence with the Vision 1440H, which aims at alleviating poverty, eradicating illiteracy, providing better health facilities to the people, strengthening ties with the private sector, NGOs, and striving for the cause of women's development.

The Astana forum is attended by delegates from more than 60 countries including Saudi Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf. This year's forum brings together government leaders, industrialists, academics, professionals and corporate managers to discuss opportunities for business partnerships in the Muslim world; Kazinform cites Arab News.
