Samsung, LG set to engage in flexible-display war
SEOUL. KAZINFORM South Korea's tech giants are set to start a full-fledged battle for smart devices equipped with flexible screens, industry sources said Tuesday, sparking another round of battle among local players to prove their technological edge.
The outlook came as Samsung Display Co., which supplies panels to Samsung Electronics Co., recently injected an estimated 3-5 trillion won (US$2.9-4.8 trillion won) to beef up its flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) facilities, aiming to expand production starting in the first quarter of 2015, Yonhap reports.
Tech players around the globe have been paying closer attention to the latest technology as it allows them to produce smart devices with various designs. Unlike traditional liquid crystal display (LCD), flexible devices are made possible with OLED panels.
LG Display Inc., Samsung's smaller rival, is also expanding its production line for flexible goods, focusing on its small and medium-sized flexible OLED panel facilities located in Paju, north of Seoul, while adding more flexible lines in Gumi, 261 kilometers from the capital city.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics Inc. have been tapping into the flexible market since last year, rolling out the Galaxy Round and the G Flex smartphones, respectively, boasting the new screens. Their sales, however, remained stagnant as the market initially reacted indifferently to the unfamiliar designs.
