Russian police foil terror attacks on Moscow - newspaper
MOSCOW. September 9. KAZINFORM Russian law-enforcement agencies have prevented two terrorist attacks in Moscow in the past week, a leading Russian daily reported on Wednesday, Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
Citing sources close to the investigation, Kommersant said the first attack was planned to coincide with the capital's city day celebrations on Saturday, while the second was set for Monday.
According to the newspaper, the plan was uncovered due to the detention of four militants in Chechnya last Thursday. The following day, police in Chechnya stopped a taxi carrying the brother of a man who had carried out a suicide bombing in Chechnya on August 25.
The passenger opened fire on police with a pistol and was killed when the officers shot back. He was found to be carrying explosives and a train ticket to Moscow, where he was due to arrive on Monday.
The second suspect, who investigators said was to carry out his bombing on Saturday, was detained in northeast Moscow. A suicide belt packed with explosives and shrapnel was found at the scene, Kazinform cites RIA Novosti. See www.en.rian.ru for full version.
