Russian citizen jailed for spying for US
MOSCOW. May 13. KAZINFORM The Moscow city court has sentenced a Russian citizen to four years in prison on Thursday. The man was convicted for turning over secret charts to the US Defense department, Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass.
The court ruled Gennady Sipachev guilty on charges punished by Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code (disclosing of state secrets). Only a preface to the verdict and a clause containing the court resolution were announced in the courtroom. The convict is to serve his prison term in a maximum security prison.
The verdict said that Gennady Sipachev turned over the charts stamped "classified" that belonged to the General Staff of the Russian Federation.
In 2008 the Russian Federal Security Service established that Sipachev, who acted on the instructions of intelligence structures of the US Department of Defense that operated under cover of different organizations, collected and turned over charts of the General Staff of the Russian Federation abroad via the Internet. These charts contained state secrets. The Pentagon needed this information for purposes of more precise targeting of its cruise missile systems.
The criminal case against Sipachev was opened on the basis of the data collected by the Russian Counter - Intelligence service and search and investigative operations conducted by the Russian FSB Investigative department, Kazinform cites Itar-Tass. See www.itar-tass.com
