A new energy generator in the Shatura power plant in Moscow region is one of 15 projects certified by Russia's Ministry of Economic Development for joint implementation under the UNCCC.

Those power plants involved will receive investment in exchange for cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

If approved by the UN Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee, the Shtura project will cut more than 1 million tons of CO2 by the end of 2012. Shatura will implement the project in cooperation with the German E.ON company.

UNCCC came into force in 1994. Currently it embraces 194 countries. In 1995, the Kyoto Agreement specified the exact volumes of cuts in greenhouse gas emissions for each participating country until 2012 when the agreement is to expire. Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com
