Russia's Zvonareva progresses to Australian Open quarter-finals
MOSCOW. January 24. KAZINFORM Russian tennis star Vera Zvonareva defeated the Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova in the fourth round of the Australian Open championship, making it into the quarter-finals. Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
Zvonareva, seed number 2, won 6-4, 6-1 over Benesova in 76 minutes. The Russian was down 2-4 in the beginning of the first set, but won the next four games, and then grabbed a comfortable victory in the second set.
The 26-year-old tennis player will now compete with Czech Petra Kvitova, who won over Italy's Flavia Pennetta 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday, for a place in the championship's semi-finals.
A duet of Russian Nadia Petrova and Liezel Huber of the United States won on Monday over Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru and Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-2 in the third round. The match lasted 74 minutes. Kazinform cites RIA Novosti. See www.en.rian.ru for full version
