Romania announces provisional presidential election result
BUCHAREST. November 25. KAZINFORM. Incumbent Romanian President Traian Basescu secured 32.44 percent of the vote in Sunday's presidential elections and Social Democrat leader Mircea Geoana 31.15 percent, according to provisional final results released by the Central Election Bureau (BEC) on Wednesday; Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
They were followed by Crin Antonescu of the National Liberal Party with 20.02 percent, according to the BEC. Other candidates attracted between 0.21 percent to 5.56 percent of the vote.
According to the Romanian Constitution, Basescu and Geoana, both of whom failed to garner a majority of the vote, face a presidential run-off on Dec. 6.
According to the election authority, a total of 18,293,277 voters were listed on the permanent rolls, of whom 9,946,748 (54.37 percent) voters cast their ballot.
These figures were supplied by the BEC after centralizing all the electronic reports sent by county electoral bureaux.
The authority is awaiting documents from the bureaux before it confirms the results.
