Referendum on extension of First Kazakh President's powers likely to be held March 2011
ASTANA. December 24. KAZINFORM /Askar Bimendin/ The referendum on extension of powers of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev is likely to take place in March 2011. Secretary of the capital's Maslikhat Vladimir Redkokashin has said it at a meeting of the initiative group from Astana held at the Eurasian National Gumilyov University.
"Today the initiative group will register the claim at the Central Election Commission. After then, the Commission should take a decision on holding the poll among the population. To my mind, the Commission will take this decision within a week", the Secretary of Astana Maslikhat said.
V. Redkokashin informed that "the referendum is likely to be held in March 2011".
A meeting of the initiative group on holding the national referendum on extension of powers of the First President of Kazakhstan - Leader of Nation N. Nazarbayev till December 6, 2020 - was held yesterday in Ust Kamenogorsk.
More than 850 delegates from 14 regions of Kazakhstan, Astana and Almaty cities, including Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to UNESCO Olzhas Suleimenov, members of the People's Assembly of Kazakhstan and others took part in the meeting.
Following the event, the participants decided to establish an initiative group which would work on organization of the national referendum consisting of 320 people from all regions of the country. In accordance with the Constitutional Law "On referendum", for organization of the referendum this initiative group must gather signatures of not less than 200, 000 citizens supporting the idea of extension of N. Nazarbayev's powers.
