Quake strikes near Bali
MOSCOW. October 13. KAZINFORM A powerful earthquake jolted Indonesia's popular resort island of Bali, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Thursday.
Accoridng to RIA Novosti, the epicenter of the 6.0-magnitude earthquake was about 100 km (62 miles) southwest of the island of Denpasar. It sent wary residents and tourists running into the streets. At least 50 people were injured, the media reported.
Although no tsunami alert was issued, the quake was felt on neighboring Java and Lombok islands, hundreds of kilometers away. The walls and ceilings of some temples and at least one school along the coast crumbled, the Associated Press reported.
Indonesia is located on the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
