President Nazarbayev unveils monument to WWII legend Ivan Panfilov in Astana
ASTANA. KAZINFORM - President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has participated in the unveiling ceremony of a monument to Hero of the Soviet Union, general Ivan Panfilov in Astana today.
The monument was erected in Zheruiyk park at the intersection of Koshkarbayev Street and Zhumabayev Street in the Kazakh capital. The 2.5m-tall bronze monument was designed by sculptor Renat Abenov. Marbles slabs commemorating 28 Panfilov's men were erected next to the monument. "This monument pays tribute not only to Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Panfilov, but also to all Kazakhstanis who participated in the war against fascism, who perished in battles of the Great Patriotic War and who returned home and helped develop our Kazakhstan," President Nazarbayev said after laying flowers at the monument. He stressed that Kazakhstanis hold the memory of Ivan Panfilov and his heroic deeds.
