Komorowski was thrust into the role of acting president after the death of Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash near the western Russian city of Smolensk on April 10.

The survey showed Komorowski would gain approximately 55% of the popular vote if a second round of the elections were held and would win over the late president's twin brother Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who would gain around 32%.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski has so far not declared his candidacy in the coming elections; however, Polish media report that many members of his Law and Justice party, which he chairs, insist he became the party candidate.

Last week, Komorowski told the country's TVN24 channel it was "absolutely necessary" to set the election date as soon as possible to overcome the period of uncertainty, which started when the country's president died in the crash.

The final decision on the elections date will be made on Wednesday, April 21.

Under the Polish constitution, elections must take place within two months after the election date announcement, which means Poles will head to the ballot box by June 20. A second round may be held on July 4.

The president and first lady died along with 95 other people, including a high-ranking Polish delegation in the plane.

The late president and first lady were laid to rest in Krakow on Sunday.

The delegation of top public figures was on its way to pay tribute to some 20,000 Polish officers executed by Soviet secret police in 1940, Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
