Peace preservation must be provided by mutual respect of sovereign interests: Majilis Speaker

ALMATY. May 14. KAZINFORM /Aigul Turysbekova/ "I am sure that joint efforts on neutralization of threats that can lead to use of weapons is necessary for achievement of stability and security on the Eurasian continent", Chairman of the Kazakh Majilis Ural Mukhamedzhanov has said at the Trans-Asian Parliamentary Forum today.

"Peace preservation must be provided by mutual respect of sovereign interests but not by demonstration of military potential", the Majilis Speaker said. He noted that cessation of nuclear tests, closing of the Semipalatinsk Test Site, voluntarily renunciation of the world's fourth largest nuclear-missile arsenal and full destruction of its infrastructure were the most important historic decisions of Kazakhstan.

The Majilis Chairman noted that a range of unprecedented initiatives on strengthening of the nuclear weapons non-proliferation regime was suggested at the Washington Nuclear Summit. These are new universal Treaty on Global Horizontal and Vertical Non-proliferation and elimination of nuclear weapons and signing of new universal Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
