OSCE Chairman-in-office presented priorities of Kazakhstan's chairmanship to UN Security Council

ASTANA. February 8. KAZINFORM OSCE Chairman-in-office, Kazakh Secretary of State-Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev presented priorities of the Kazakhstan's OSCE chairmanship to the UN Security Council and held meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York, Kazinform refers to the press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.

K.Saudabayev in his speech laid emphasis on the potential of the OSCE on rendering assistance to the UN in effective prevention of threats and responding to them. The Head of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry also stressed that the Kazakhstan's chairmanship will make every effort to settle protracted conflicts, especially on the territory of the former Soviet Union. K.Saudabayev noted that special attention will be paid to monitoring of protracted conflicts and preventive mechanisms of the OSCE will be mused in order to prevent any signs of escalation of these conflicts. The OSCE Chairman-in-office is expected to visit Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia in the middle of February as well.

Permanent Representatives of the UN Security Council member countries expressed support to the priorities of Kazakhstan at the post of the OSCE chairman.

At the meeting with Ban Ki-moon the sides complimented the efficient character of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN and discussed it prospects. The UN Secretary General noted great opportunities for further strengthening of cooperation between the UN and the OSCE in solution of topical problems on Euroatlantic and Eurasian space. Ban Ki-moon appreciated the initiatives of N.Nazarbayev on announcement of 2010 the Year of Cultures Rapprochement and August 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests, supported by the UN General Assembly.

The sides discussed the agenda of the visit of Ban Ki-moon to Kazakhstan scheduled for spring this year as well.
