In addition to the 28 core sports, each Olympic Games organizer may temporarily include up to five additional sports. This allows for local conditions and the popularity of certain sports at the time of the Games to be taken into account.

Breakdancing, which debuted in Paris, is excluded even though it was first practiced in the United States. At Olympics 2024, Kazakh B-Boy Amir Zakirov advanced to the 2024 Olympic Games breaking quarterfinals.

Baseball, softball, lacrosse and cricket are returning. Since the previous time baseball and softball were considered official Olympic sports at the 2008 Beijing Games, the sports returned only once in Tokyo three years ago as optional sports chosen by the local organizing committee.

Lacrosse was an official Olympic sport in 1904 and 1908, though only three teams competed in the former and only two in the latter. It has since returned three times on a demonstration basis, but not since 1948.

Cricket was included on the Olympic roster just once: in 1900, when only two teams — Britain and host France, fielding a team composed mainly of British expatriates — competed.

Flag football and squash have also been added for the first time in Olympic history.

In modern pentathlon, horse-riding element will be replaced by an obstacle competition. Boxing has not yet been approved, as a new governing body is needed for this sport.
