Nuclear issue of common concern for Kazakhstan and Japan – N. Nazarbayev

ASTANA-AKORDA. August 10. KAZINFORM Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Katsuya Okada.

The issues regarding bilateral cooperation were discussed at the meeting, the Presidential press service informs.

'Nuclear issue is of common concern for Kazakhstan and Japan', Nursultan Nazarbayev noted. The Semipalatinsk nuclear test site had been active for a long time in Kazakhstan that affected the state and its people.

'While addressing ecological problems we had always felt the support of your country. We are grateful to your country to support our initiative to declare August 29 the World Day of Renunciation of Weapon of Mass Destruction', the President said.

Japanese Minister noted that Japan considered Kazakhstan as a geopolitical partner in Central Asia and highly appraised the policy of Kazakhstan regarding nuclear disarmament and strengthening security.

'We have to raise Kazakh-Japanese relations to a qualitatively new level. Kazakhstan is rich in energy resources and Japan is a high-technology country. Putting these integral parts together we can reach a new level of relations between our countries', Mr. Okada said at a briefing.
