Nuclear disarmament, security and democracy discussed by Kazakh senators in Washington, DC
ASTANA. May 10. KAZINFORM - The delegation of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan headed by the deputy chairman of the Senate Alexander Sudin is on a working visit to the United States, the press service of the Kazakh Senate informs.
The visit is aimed at strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between Kazakhstan and the United States, and as part of the 10th anniversary of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, convened at the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2003.
In Washington Senators Alexander Sudin, Serik Akylbay, Husain Valiev and Chairman of the Agency for Religious Affairs Kairat Lama Sharif met with parliamentarians and representatives of the U.S. Department of State.
The meetings were held with Senators John Hoven and Jeff Flake. A.Sudin also talked with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives Kevin Kramer, congressmen Eni Faleomavaega, Dana Rohrabacher, Mike Honda and Gregory Meeks.
At the State Department the Kazakh delegation spoke to U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake, as well as the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Uzroy Zeya.
The meetings focused on issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, international and regional security, economic development, and promotion of democratic values.
On Capitol Hill there is a photo exhibition dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which has been attended by a number of congressmen, including Iliana Ros-Lehtinen, co-chair of the Committee on International Relations of the House of Representatives of the United States.
