“No nuclear weapons” Kazakh-Japanese exhibition opened in New York

YORK. August 11. KAZINFORM /Aliya Altyngazina/ Opening ceremony of Kazakh-Japanese exhibition "No nuclear weapons" was held in the UN Headquarters in New York.

The exposition was presented by the Kazakh and Japanese Permanent Missions of Kazakhstan and Japan to the United Nations Organization within the continued measures on nuclear disarmament and prior to the Review conference of countries, participating in the Agreement on non-proliferation of the nuclear weapons that will be held next year.   

The exhibition coincided with "We must disarm" campaign of the UN Secretary General, inaugurated the beginning of preparation to the International Day of Peace on September 21. This year the Peace Day is devoted to the issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The exhibition is also devoted to the 20 anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site and establishment of "Nevada-Semey" international movement.

The exposition is divided into two sections, devoted to the decades of nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk polygon and atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Administrations of Semey, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Hiroshima International Council for Health Care of the Radiation-Exposed, the National Nuclear Center and the State Central Archive of Kazakhstan took part in the organization of the exhibition.  

Representatives of the member states, the UN Secretariat, social, political and business community of the USA, the Kazakh Diaspora and mass media took part in the opening ceremony. The exhibition will continue till the end of September 2009.
