New Zealand hit by M6.3 quake, some damage reported

SYDNEY. January 20. KAZINFORM New Zealand's North Island was hit by a strong quake on Monday afternoon that reportedly caused some damage, though there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The quake, which occurred at 3:52 p.m., had a magnitude of 6.3 and was followed by several aftershocks, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors global seismic activity, Kyodo reports. It was centered 115 kilometers northeast of Wellington, in the southern part of the island, and had an estimated depth of 27.4 km.
