Nazarbayev suggests introducing mandatory stress testing of control and protection systems at nuclear facilities

KIEV. April 19. KAZINFORM /Muratbek Makulbekov/ It is necessary to introduce mandatory regular stress testing of control and protection systems at nuclear facilities under the auspices of the IAEA and with the assistance of independent experts. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev suggested this at the Kiev nuclear safety summit on Tuesday.

"Today, once again, like 25 years ago, the world has faced the problem of security of nuclear energy. Unfortunately, the reason for this became an emergency situation at the Japanese nuclear power plant "Fukushima", which clearly demonstrated the lack of planetary mechanisms for managing global risks in the development of nuclear energy. It is obvious that further plans to build nuclear power plants require new approaches, particularly taking into account the intention to develop nuclear power in countries that previously had no experience in this area," Nazarbayev emphasized.

He noted that the safety of nuclear power plants and other civilian nuclear facilities should be recognized as a major component of global nuclear security. It is needed to develop uniform, extremely tough and internationally recognized standards and criteria for safety of nuclear facilities. Without strict observance of such standards no nuclear power plant in the world should be allowed to operate.
