NATO Liaison Office for Central Asia to be opened in Tashkent

TASHKENT. KAZINFORM - An official opening ceremony of the NATO Liaison Office for Central Asia will be held in Tashkent on May 14, the alliance said in a statement.

With the assistance of a small staff, NATO Liaison Office for Central Asia will serve as the diplomatic mission of NATO and promote practical cooperation with partners in the region in various areas, including defense planning and analysis, support for NATO operations, military education and training, civil emergency planning, cooperation on scientific and environmental issues and public diplomacy, according to the report. Special Representative of NATO Secretary General for Central Asia and Caucasus James Appathurai will attend the opening ceremony. He will pay a two-day visit to Tashkent on May 16. Besides the opening ceremony, Appathurai plans to meet with Uzbek officials, Kazinform refers to trend.az. The relations between Uzbekistan and NATO were established in December 1991, according to the foreign ministry.
