According to official data, at least 1,242 people were rescued after the mountainous region was devastated by mudslides over the weekend.

In Gansu, the mudslides tore down entire apartment blocks, and buried houses and streets under deep layers of mud.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has called for a massive search and rescue work and early restoration of drinking water supplies, Xinhua said.

China's emergencies ministry said earlier that over 1,000 people have been killed and millions were displaced since the start of the year as a result of heavy floods.
