All but 43 of those stranded were drifting on a piece of ice in the Gulf of Riga near the capital city of Riga, according to the National Fire and Rescue Service.

The others were on an ice floe near the seaside resort town of Jurmala, according to rescue officials.

Rough seas were complicating rescue efforts by the Fire and Rescue Service, National Border Guard, Coast Guard and military officials, the fire service said.
