Moot Court competition between Financial Police Academy and KazGU
ASTANA. May 12. KAZINFORM On Wednesday, May 12, at the Supreme Court Building in Astana, U.S. Ambassador Richard Hoagland, joined by the Director of the Financial Police Academy, Serik Shokatayev, and the Rector of the Kazakh University of Law and Humanities, Marat Kogamov, will open Kazakhstan's first ever trial-level intercollegiate moot court competition. The moot court trial, which will be conducted completely in English and will incorporate American criminal procedure, will take place between a team from the Financial Police Academy (FPA) representing the prosecution and a team from the Kazakh University of Law and Humanities (KAZGU), representing the defense. The competition was created to improve the students' English ability, to make them more familiar with American courtroom procedures and evidence collection, and to raise their awareness of the rule of law in police work.
There have been other moot court competitions in Kazakhstan, like the Jessup International Moot Court Competition, for example, but they have been appellate arguments rather than mock trials: that is, students stand in front of judges and try to persuade them. By contrast, on May 12 the students from the FPA and KAZGU will conduct a full, criminal trial; they will present evidence, question witnesses, cross-examine witnesses, and raise objections, a press release of the U.S. Embassy in Astana reads.
