Measles cases surge in N Kazakhstan

403 suspected measles cases have been registered in the North Kazakhstan region as of today, with 254 laboratory-confirmed  ones,  Kazinform News Agency reports.

At a briefing held on Monday, deputy chief of the sanitary-epidemiological department Arman Kushbassov said, measles incident rate went up by 3.5 times in the region – from 47 to 168 cases.

In his words, 215 of those infected or 85% were registered in Petropavlovsk.

56% are children aged from 1 to 4 years, and most of them (82%) are unvaccinated.

15,704 people or 60% were additionally immunized against measles under the nationwide vaccination campaign launched early November last year.
