Massive earthquakes unlikely in Kazakhstan this year: seismic official

ALMATY. June 1. KAZINFORM  Destructive earthquakes are unlikely to happen in Kazakhstan this year, a state seismic official said Thursday.

Tremors with a magnitude below 7 will occur occasionally throughout the year but no massive earthquakes are likely to happen, said Tanatkan Abakanov, director of the Institute of Seismology of the Ministry of Education and Science, Xinhua reports.

"We discuss the monitoring results every week," he told reporters.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck early Thursday with an epicenter 146 km southeast of the Almaty city but did not cause any destruction or causalities.
