Martin Luther King Jr. remembered in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES. January 19. KAZINFORM A traditional ceremony where people take part in a parade and several other related events were held in South Los Angeles Monday in commemoration of the 81th birthday of famous black civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.; Kazinform refers to Xinhua.

Participants braved the steady rain to walk along the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Los Angeles, as part of the 25th annual Kingdom Day Parade which features marching bands, floats and other entertainment.

Other activities planned for what is considered a day of service include school beautification efforts in Van Nuys and East L.A. and a blood drive at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was scheduled to join an estimated 200 volunteers in a schoolwide beautification effort at Van Nuys Middle School.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and some City Council members also took part in the event. Actress-comedian Niecy Nash, host of the Style Network series "Clean House", acted as celebrity grand marshal; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
