Majilis approves bill on amendments to legislation on capital punishment

ASTANA. May 27. KAZINFORM. /Muratbek Makulbekov/ The Majilis of the Kazakh Parliament has approved a draft law ?On introduction of amendments to some legislative acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the issues of capital punishment? at its plenary sitting today.

The amendments are aimed at bringing the current criminal legislation into compliance with the Constitution and ensuring a fundamental human right to life. It is proposed to impose death penalty only for terrorist crimes causing people's death and for heavy and especially grave crimes committed in time of war, with granting a sentenced person the right to intercede for mercy. At present 18 components of crime imply death penalty. After the amendments are passed the number of crime components will be reduced to 8.
