Landslide kills 9 in southern Peru

LIMA. April 5. KAZINFORM Nine people died and six more were injured when a landslide hit Cusco city in the southern Peruvian department of Cusco, the National Police (PNP) said on Monday. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
Italo Perochena, head of the PNP, said the landslide occurred on Sunday after days of heavy rains left the soils in the mountainous department saturated and weak.
One part of the Ayahuyco Hill crashed down near the urban area and affecting the Villa Maria settlement, Perochena said.
Soldiers and police agents aided by specialized machinery are undertaking search and rescue operations while the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, he added. Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com
