Kyrgyz president to be inaugurated August 2
BISHKEK. July 30. KAZINFORM Kyrgyzstan's newly re-elected President Kurmanbek Bakiev will be inaugurated on August 2, the mayor of the country's capital announced on Wednesday; Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
Bishkek has been swept by street protests since Bakiyev's landslide victory last week, amid opposition allegations of election fraud. A city prosecutor said earlier on Wednesday that 50 demonstrators had been arrested, but opposition leaders said the actual figure was at least three times higher.
Mayor Nariman Tyuleyev said in a statement published on the city administration's website that after the summit of the post-Soviet Collective Security Treaty Organization on Friday and Saturday, "one more very important event, the inauguration of the president of the Kyrgyz Republic, will take place on August 2."
The Kyrgyz Constitutional Court has yet to officially recognize the presidential election results. A court session has been scheduled for Thursday; Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
