Khoja Akhmet Yassawi Mausoleum

The Mausoleum of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi is the monument of architecture of the XIV century located in the town of Turkestan, South Kazakhstan oblast.

The monument was erected over the grave of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi, a poet-mystic and a religious preacher, in 1389-1399 by order of Timur. The Mausoleum consists of 8 facilities ? a mausoleum itself, a mosque, two palace halls (small and big aksarais), a library (kitabkhana) and a household complex which includes a well (kudukkhana), a kitchen (askhana), living rooms (khudjras) etc. In the Islamic world the Khoja Akhmet Yassawi Mausoleum is considered as the second Mekkah. Since 1982 the Mausoleum was taken under the state protection. In 2003 by the decision of the UNESCO it was added to the world?s cultural heritage list.
