Kazakhstani delegation attends high-level meeting at UN General Assembly
ASTANA. KAZINFORM - On June 9-10, 2014, High-level meeting themed "Contributions of Human Rights and the Rule of Law in the post-2015 Development Agenda" took place at the United Nations General Assembly. The event represented one of the final steps in the process to develop a new global development agenda beyond 2015, Kazakh MFA's press service reports.
Delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the event was represented by Tastemir Abishev, Secretary of the Commission on Human Rights under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In his speech, T.Abishev highlighted the importance of ensuring fundamental human rights and freedoms in work of the United Nations as well as at national and international level, in order to achieve global sustainable development, international peace and security, and resolution of local and international conflicts.
During the High-level meeting, Secretary of the Commission on Human Rights met with UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic and informed the latter about the situation with human rights in Kazakhstan particularly with the vulnerable groups, such as refugees, migrants, stateless persons, repatriates, and victims of human trafficking. In addition, discussion on a wide range of issues to further develop cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN human rights bodies also took place at the meeting.
A round table with the participation of leading non-governmental organizations in the sphere of international human rights, including the Human Rights Watch, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Open Society Foundation, and Amnesty International, was organized by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations. During the round table, the participants were presented with and discussed reports of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the human rights situation in the country, on human repatriates, stateless persons and refugees, and the situation of the rights of migrants. International human rights activists expressed appreciation for the organization of the event and praised the efforts of Kazakhstan to strengthen cooperation with of the state with international non-governmental human rights organizations. The NGOs also raised questions on specific matters related to the activities of the media in the country, as well as provided recommendations for further improvement of the human rights activities in Kazakhstan.
