Kazakhstan wheelchair tennis championships kick off in Astana
The opening ceremony of the Kazakhstan Wheelchair Tennis Championships was held today at the Daulet Tennis Center in Astana, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation.
The event was attended by Bolatbek Duketayev, Director of the Sports Training Center for Persons with Physical Disabilities, and Dias Doskarayev, Vice President of the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, who wished the athletes success and strong performances throughout the tournament.
“Wheelchair tennis has been developing in Kazakhstan since 2021, and the fact that we are already holding the fifth national championship is an important indicator of the progress being made. In a relatively short period of time, we have managed to build a solid participation base, with more than 100 athletes across the country now involved in the sport. The growing number of participants is increasing competition, which in turn helps raise the overall level of performance,” said Dias Doskarayev, Vice President of the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation.
He stated that the national team consists of 18 athletes, adding that 24 Kazakhstani wheelchair tennis players were ranked, with four among the world’s top 200. This was the result of the athletes’ hard work, dedication, and determination to succeed. It was also a testament to the support provided by parents, the professionalism of coaches, and the efforts of the Sports Training Center, the Paralympic Committee, and government institutions.
“The government places significant emphasis on the development of inclusive sports. For its part, the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, which oversees wheelchair tennis, remains committed to the continued growth of the discipline. Our goal is to see wheelchair tennis represented in all regions of the country, increase participation, train more coaches, and ensure that athletes have access to courts and funding opportunities to compete in international tournaments,” Doskarayev added.
The championship features nearly 40 athletes from the Aktobe, Atyrau, Karaganda, Kyzylorda, and Mangystau regions, as well as the cities of Astana and Almaty. The competition includes men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events across two classifications: Open and Quad.
Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that the ITF J100 junior tennis tournament had begun on the clay courts at the CSKA Tennis Center in Almaty.
