Kazakhstan to set up GMO registry

TANA. September 16. KAZINFORM /Muratbek Makulbekov/ "Kazakhstan will set up a registry of genetically modified organisms," Vice Minister of Education and Science Murat Orunkhanov told today introducing the draft law of Kazakhstan on state regulation of genetic engineering activity.

"Potential risks stemming from the use of the genetically modified organisms arouse considerable public concern for the GMO influence on people has not been properly studied yet," he added.

According to him, the GMO control in Kazakhstan fails to meet the international requirements creating conditions conducive to unhindered import of such goods to Kazakhstan.

The state regulation in the sphere of gene engineering is purposed to enhance people's and country's security.
