Kazakhstan to send 139 peacekeepers to Golan Heights

The country is to send 139 peacekeepers to the Golan Heights, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Kazakhstan is to send a total of 430 peacekeepers as part of the country’s medium-term and long-term plans based on the mandate it received from the UN for an independent peacekeeping mission.

As the country’s defense ministry said 139 Kazakhstani peacekeepers are to be deployed in the Golan Heights. According to the ministry, a new parliament decree is to be issued in case this number is increased by the UN.

The first contingent of Kazakhstani peacekeepers is to be sent to the Golan Heights for 12 months.

Earlier it was reported the UN granted Kazakhstan the mandate for its independent peacekeeping mission. The peacekeeping contingent of the Kazakh Armed Forces of up to 430 peacekeepers will join the UN missions as follow: the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF, Syria-Israel), the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO, Palestine-Israel), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA, Sudan).
