Kazakhstan to collect 156 Caspian seals as part of scientific research

Kazakhstan is to collect 156 Caspian seals on its Duneva, Tyuleni and Remontnye (Aktoty) islands in the Caspian Sea as well as along the coastal areas of Mangistau and Atyrau regions to tag them as part of the country’s efforts to conserve endangered aquatic animals, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

According to the country’s agriculture ministry, the animals are to be released into their natural habitat after a research study is completed.

Kazakhstan will also collect endangered Bastard sturgeons from the Ili, Karatal rivers, Lake Balkhash and Kapshagai reservoir in Almaty region, Aral barbels from the Syrdarya river in Kyzylorda region, common taimen from the Yertis river and its streams in East Kazakhstan, Abai regions, Nelma from the Yeris river in Pavlodar region for research purposes to breed them in specially created conditions with further release into their natural habitat.

Presently, the country’s scientific organizations are seeking permits to embark on research to study and conserve rare and endangered fish species and other aquatic animals.
