Kazakhstan to build new water reservoir in Zhambyl region

Kazakhstan plans to build a new water reservoir “Akmola”  in Zhambyl region to tackle water scarcity problem in the region's Baizak and Talas districts, Kazinform News Agency learned from the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

The promising project was discussed back in 2020, when the administrations of Talas and Baizak regions said they plan to build a reservoir with a capacity of 11 million cubic meters. The declared value of the project made 4.8 billion tenge.

Today, the Ministry informed that the water reservoir will be built in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank.

76 canals and one operating reservoir will be repaired as well.

“18 canals in Baizak district, one canal in Talas district, 11 canals in Sarysu district, one canal in Merke district, and 45 canals in Shu district, as well as Karakonyz water reservoir will be repaired in Korday district,” the Ministry says.

The reconstruction and construction of water reservoirs will let improve delivery of water to 9,300 hectares of land, while the repair of 76 canals will improve water supply to 24,700 hectares of cropland.

“This year, the region plans to repair 67 kilometers of canal sections, to improve water supply to 13,000 hectares of cropland,” Kudaibergen Korganbayev, director of the department for water facilities development, says.

Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan will send 16bn cubic meters of irrigation water to Kazakhstan in 2025. 4.5 billion cubic meters of water were accumulated in Shardara reservoir in Kazakhstan's south.
