Kazakhstan's presidency in SCO was quite successful - SCO Secretary General

BEIJING. June 1. KAZINFORM /Ruslan Suleimenov/ The presidency of Kazakhstan in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been quite successful and the level of preparations held for holding the anniversary summit of the Organization is very high. SCO Secretary General Muratbek Imanaliyev said during the live conference 'Astana-Moscow-Beijing'.

Speaking about the presidency of Kazakhstan in the SCO, M. Imanaliyev noted that Kazakhstan held a number of important events, in particular these were the meetings of Secretaries of Security Councils, Defense Ministers and Ministers of Foreign and Interior Affairs. 'The work that was done in social and economic sector also should be mentioned. These were the events hosted in Astana such as the meetings of Ministers of Healthcare, Education, Culture,' The Secretary General said.

He also noted that new initiatives and strategies of the SCO further activities would be discussed at the summit in Astana. 'The SCO has become a factor in ensuring stability in the region over these 10 years of its existence,' he emphasized.

Touching upon the issue of accession of new members to the Organization, M. Imanaliyev said that the SCO was an open international organization. 'Any state willing to become a legitimate member of the SCO can do it without any obstacles,' the Secretary General added.

'Besides, the application of Afghanistan for accession to the SCO as an observer country will be discussed at the summit in Astana,' Mr. Imanaliyev said.

As was earlier reported, the SCO anniversary summit will be held on June 15 in Astana.
