Kazakhstan-OSCE: US experts expect new impulse in European security development
COW. September 16. KAZINFORM /Narymbek Ismagulov/ Consideration of a new architecture of the European security will be one of the key spectrums of Kazakhstan's activity on the post of the OSCE chairman. Participant of the Valdai international discussion club, Director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at Georgetown University Angela Stent expressed her opinion.
According to A.Stent, for the last years Kazakhstan worked closely with the OSCE on all spheres of the Organization's activity. "There is a big merit of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On my opinion, Kazakhstan worked strenuously to study all features of the OSCE functioning in detail for expression of its point of view of the world cooperation problems. Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the OSCE will give an opportunity to the country to become a leader in the work on development of this Organization's institutions", she emphasized.
As A.Stent noted, it is expected that during the chairmanship in the OSCE Kazakhstan will pay attention to such major issues like strengthening cooperation of the OSCE member-states on military-political conflicts prevention, modernization of electoral processes monitoring in different countries, especially in the post-Soviet space.
"The work on elaboration of a new architecture of the European security voiced by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will be one of the main topics on the agenda of Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the OSCE. I suggest that we will be witnesses of certain proposals on this idea", she said.
Participant of the Valdai international discussion club, Senior Research Fellow in Russian and Eurasian Studies of the Heritage Foundation Ariel Cohen noted that Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the OSCE is a serious challenge for the republic and its diplomacy.
"The OSCE is at the delicate stage. As is known, Russia has some claims against its work. In this connection, Kazakhstan will have an opportunity to solve these claims by the corresponding recommendations elaboration taking into account opinions of the western OSCE members", A.Cohen said.
"In my opinion, Kazakhstan can play a positive role in this Organization maintenance, including on three directions of the OSCE: military-political, economic and human rights", the American political scientist said.
