Kazakhstan may face electricity shortage by next winter
Nabi Aitzhanov, chairman of the Kazakhstani company of Electricity Grids Management KEGOC, said that Kazakhstan may face electricity shortage in October 2024-March 2025, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
The forecast balances for the next autumn-winter period show shortages of electricity supplies and electricity capacity from October 2024 to March 2025, said Aitzhanov during a meeting of the board of the energy ministry of Kazakhstan.
According to him, the country will lack 16.4GW of electricity given the maximum electricity demand of 17.4GW and the electricity generation of 16.4GW, which could be covered by import from Russia or electricity limitations.
The speaker added that to ensure the southern region fully meets its electricity demand of over 4,500 MW and avoid limitations the five blocks of the Zhambyl power plant need to operate.
In general, according to the data from KEGOC, the forecast balances for 2024-30 demonstrate a considerable electricity deficiency of up to 6.2 GW by 2030.
