Kazakhstan intends to establish production of nuclear fuel for atomic power stations – Ministry of Industry and New Technologies

ASTANA. July 23. KAZINFORM /Murat Zhakeev/ Kazakhstan intends to extract uranium and establish production of nuclear fuel for atomic power stations. Director of the Department of Atomic Energy and Industry of the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies Mazhit Sharipov made it public at the session of the board of the Ministry.

According to him there are several agreements with foreign companies in this field.

'Kazakhstan plans to extract and export uranium. Our goal to enter world market with the products in the form of fuel assemblies which is nuclear fuel for atomic power stations', M. Sharipov said.

Currently there is an agreement with Canadian company Cameco on establishment of conversion production of those products in Kazakhstan.

The production of fuel assemblies is the final stage of producing nuclear fuel. Kazatomprom will supply fuel pellets for fuel assemblies.

According to the statistics of 2009 Kazakhstan is ranked first in the volume of uranium extraction in the world.
