Kazakhstan calls for decisive steps in struggle against nuclear threat: K.Saudabayev

YORK. September 25. KAZINFORM /Aliya Altyngazina/ Sixth Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was held in New York. Kazakh Secretary of State - Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev took part in the Conference.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon addressing the participants of the Conference said that the CTBT lays the foundation for world free of nuclear weapons and appealed all guests to sign the Agreement. He paid attention to Kazakh-Japanese exhibition "No nuclear weapons" held in the UN headquarter. The exposition is devoted to the consequences of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk nuclear polygon.

State Secretary Kanat Saudabayev in his speech noted that Kazakhstan supports the intention of USA President Barack Obama to enhance the process. Being the country that closed the fourth biggest nuclear tests site and abandoned the fourth biggest nuclear-missile arsenal Kazakhstan has the right to state the necessity of further measures on reduction of the nuclear threat.   

Our republic extensively cooperates with the CTBT preparation commission. One of the most advanced national monitoring systems functions in Kazakhstan. Five stations included into the international system proved their effectiveness in concurrent detection of the North-Korean nuclear blast. "Condemning the North Korea's nuclear tests on May 25, 2009 Kazakhstan appeals DPRK to pay attention to our experience in nuclear disarmament and successful peaceful development in cooperation with the international community", the Kazakh Foreign Minister said.    

Kazakhstan calls for the countries not to delay the development of the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT). K.Saudabayev paid attention to the proposal of President N.Nazarbayev on the development of new universal Vertical and Horizontal Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.
