Kazakhstan adheres to course for ensuring global security and nuclear-free future for all mankind - Y.Kazykhanov

VIENNA. August 31. KAZINFORM /Timur Bekturganov/ Since gaining independence Kazakhstan is exerting all efforts for ensuring global security and mass destruction weapons nonproliferation. Renouncing the nuclear arsenal and closing the Semipalatinsk Test Site in 1991, at present our country's leadership follows the course for ensuring nuclear-free future for all mankind.

Kazakh Ambassador to Austria, Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Yerzhan Kazykhanov has announced it at an opening ceremony of a photo exhibition dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Tests in the Vienna International Center on Monday, August 30.

As is known, on Kazakhstan's initiative the UN General Assembly adopted declaration of August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests in December, 2009. This day in 1991 Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev took decision on the Semipalatinsk Test Site closure.

The photo exhibition dedicated to this date and organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the International Organizations in Vienna in cooperation with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) will be held in the Vienna International Center on August 30-September 3. It represents unique photo materials which demonstrate the polygon history from the first explosion in 1949 till its closure, terrible consequences of nuclear tests and implementation of the projects on environmental and socio-economic rehabilitation of the region.

Heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in Austria, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, foreign scientific and expert circles, and mass media took part in the event.
