The recent events all over the globe (tsunamis, earthquakes and others) have yet again uncovered the vulnerability of people and children in particular during the periods of increased emergencies. That is why the accent is being globally shifted from responding to prevention of emergencies with a view to abate and mitigate the consequences of emergencies, the press service of the UNICEF in Kazakhstan reports.

The aim of the workshop is to raise the knowledge of specialists from various ministries and agencies about the Hyogo Framework of Action, to deepen understanding among all persons taking decisions on importance of Disaster Risk Reduction events in all sectors, planning of programmes with due consideration for Disaster Risk Reduction and budget allocations for these measures. We should understand that security matters to each of us, and each ministry or agency is responsible for prevention and mitigation of disaster consequences.

This workshop was held as part of the joint programme among the Ministries of Emergency and Education and Science with the assistance of the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Department (DIPECHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) "Disaster Risk Reduction among the most vulnerable groups of population". The Programme aims at integration of the disaster risk reduction components in education system.

The programme in Kazakhstan encompasses some 500 teachers of schools and caregivers of pre-school institutions, as well as over 9,000 children aged 9-17 residing in Almaty city and region, East Kazakhstan and South Kazakhstan regions.
