Kazakh drama «Shal» shortlisted for Oscar Best Foreign Language Film
ASTANA. October 9. KAZINFORM Kazakh drama "Shal" (Old Man) is running for foreign language Oscar this year, the press service of JSC "Kazakhfilm" says.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortlisted the Kazakh drama directed by Yermek Tursunov along with other 72 motion pictures from across the globe that will compete in the Oscar best foreign-language film category.
Entries from such acclaimed directors as Thomas Vinterberg (Denmark), Wong Kar-wai (Hong-Kong), Danis Tanović (Bosnia) and Fyodor Bondarchuk (Russia) were submitted.
Released on October 11, 2012, "Shal" is based on Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and The Sea". The film was well-received in Kazakhstan and won several prizes at the international film festivals.
The Oscars will be aired on March 2, 2014 in Los Angeles.
