Karaganda official resigns amid attempted murder probe

KARAGANDA. KAZINFORM - Akim (mayor) of Karkaralinsk, a town in Karaganda region, Nurlan Batyrbekov has stepped down. Mr. Batyrbekov tendered his resignation on December 5, officials say.
Perhaps, Batyrbekov's unexpected resignation has something to do with the fact that his 23-year-old son is currently behind bars. Batyrbekov junior was charged with attempted murder after he and his friend brutally attacked an unnamed young man in Karkaralinsk in October. The attackers left the victim to die outside the town and set his car on fire. However, the man miraculously survived and was hospitalized with severe injuries. A criminal investigation is underway.
